Description

WORK0375 indicates whether respondents reported their main activity for ASEC, 1975 as "working at a job or business." Other possible responses to the question about the individual's main activity in ASEC, 1975 were "attending college" (see COLLEG75), "on active duty in the Armed Forces" (MILIT75), or "something else."

Comparability

The question wording was identical for 1976-1980, but due to the use of a fixed reference point (ASEC, 1975 rather than, for example, "one year ago"), the recall period changes over time. In 1976, respondents reported that they were employed one year ago; in 1977, that they were employed two years ago; in 1978, that they were employed three years ago; in 1979, that they were employed three years ago; and in 1980, that they were employed five years ago.

A parallel line of questioning, using ASEC, 1980 as the reference point, was included in the 1981 ASEC CPS (see WORK0380). WORK0380 is comparable to WORK0375 for 1976 only, with both identifying persons whose main activity one year ago was working at a job or business.
