Description

VCOMBAT indicates whether veterans were exposed to combat during their time of service in active duty military.

Comparability

From 2001 through 2005, this variable is based on responses to a survey question which asked, "Has (person) ever been awarded a campaign or expeditionary medal?" Campaign or expeditionary medals are awarded to members of the U.S. military who serve in any combat zone. After 2005, this variable is based on responses to a survey question which asked, "Did (person) EVER serve in a combat or war zone?"

In 2003 and earlier, Veteran's supplement respondents were 18 and older; in 2005 and later, respondents to the supplement were 17 and older.
