Description
TCHEW reports the frequency of a respondent's chewing tobacco use, and whether they have ever used it regularly.
This variable is part of the Tobacco Use Supplement.
Comparability
The options given for frequency of use changed in 1998. In the 1995 and 1996 samples, respondents were simply asked if they currently used chewing tobacco regularly, while in 1998 and later samples, they could respond that they used chewing tobacco every day, some days, or not at all.
In 1996 and later samples, TCHEW is composed of two questions. In 1992 and 1993, the variable is created from four questions.
Universe
- 1995-1996 (selected months): Persons age 15+ who responded they had ever used a tobacco product other than cigarettes.
- 1998-2003 (selected months): Persons age 15+ who did not respond that they had never used a tobacco product other than cigarettes.
- 2006-2007 (selected months): Persons age 15+.
