Description

STRCHLK reports whether the weeks that part-year workers spent looking for work or on layoff during the previous calendar year were "all in one stretch" or "in more than one stretch" (for 1962-1967) or occurred in one stretch, two stretches, or three or more stretches (for 1968 onward).

Comparability

As noted above, responses to STRECHLK were coded dichotomously for 1962-1967 and in more detail for later years. Researchers who wish to compare responses across the full time span must recode the data beginning in 1968 into the dichotomous values ("all in one stretch" versus "in more than one stretch") used earlier.

Beginning in 1976, WKSUNEM1 reports the total number of weeks, in single weeks, that part-year workers looked for work or were on layoff during the preceding calendar year. WKSUNEM2 provides the same information in intervalled form beginning in 1962.

Universe

  • 1962: Civilian part-year workers age 14+ who spent at least one week looking for work or on layoff during the previous calendar year, and who were coded as "Match" in the "February-March match" variable (pre-1968 samples do not include persons under age 14).
  • 1963-1979: Civilian part-year workers age 14+ who spent at least one week looking for work or on layoff during the previous calendar year.
  • 1980-1989: Civilian part-year workers age 15+ who spent at least one week looking for work or on layoff during the previous calendar year.
  • 1990-2023: Persons who were part-year workers age 15+ who spent at least one week looking for work or on layoff during the previous calendar year.
