Description
SEX gives each person's sex.
Comparability
In some Basic Monthly samples between 1976 and 1988, there are several household head/wife of head couples that are of the same sex in the input data. In these instances, IPUMS allocates SEX such that heads of household are male and wives of household heads are female, as the CPS allocates either sex or marital status and relationship to head variables in later years to disallow same-sex couples in the data. These records have a QSEX value of 12 and amount to only 84 cases.
Comparability with IPUMS-USA
This variable is fully comparable with the SEX variable in IPUMS-USA.
