Description
MIGRAT75 indicates whether the respondent had changed residence between March 1, 1975 and March 1 of the survey year. Data are available for 1978, 1979, and 1980; thus, MIGRAT75 respectively captures whether the respondent had changed residence in the last three years (between 1975 and 1978), in the last four years (between 1975 and 1979), and in the last 5 years (between 1975 and 1980).
The category "Same house" includes both persons who did not move since the reference date (March 1 of 1975) and those who had moved and then returned to their earlier residence. Movers are subdivided into the following categories: those who had moved within the same county; those who had crossed county lines but stayed within the same state (to the same SMSA or not to the same SMSA); those who had moved to a different state (either contiguous or non-contiguous with their earlier state of residence); and those who had migrated from abroad.
MIGRATE1 covers changes in residence since March 1 one year ago; MIGRATE5 covers changes in residence since March 1 five years ago. For 1980, MIGRATE75 and MIGRATE5 present the same information.
Comparability
The question wording for MIGRATE75 is consistent over time, and the values for the variable are nearly comparable. For those who moved within a state but between counties, 1978 identifies two categories of movers: 1) Different county, same state, same SMSA; 2) different county, same state, not in same SMSA. 1979-1980 add a third category: "moved within state, between counties." The three categories can be combined to maximize comparability over time.
Users should keep in mind that, despite the aforementioned similarities, the length of the reference period (3 years, 4 years, and 5 years) is very different for 1978, 1979, and 1980.
Comparability with IPUMS-USA
Most censuses included in IPUMS-USA collected information about whether respondents were living in the same house five years ago. The IPUMS-USA variable MIGRATE5 is largely comparable with the IPUMS-CPS variable MIGRATE75 for 1980 only (though the latter contains more detail on movement within a state but between counties). IPUMS-USA has no variables related to migration during the past three years or during the past four years, and thus has no equivalent to MIGRATE75 for 1978 and 1979.
