- UnHarmonized Variables
JTOCC reports the occupation code of the job the respondent was working one year ago.
This variable is part of the Job Tenure Supplement.
The occupation coding scheme for the CPS changed over time, and JTOCC gives the responses in the coding scheme currently used for the sample year. For an occupation variable that is comparable over time, see JTOCC1990
After 1996, the universe includes employed individuals aged 15 and older; prior to 1996, employed individuals aged 14 and older are included.
The universe for JTOCC in 1996 differs considerably from other years. In 1996 respondents who did not change jobs in the last year are in universe. In all other available years only those who changed jobs in the past year are asked JTOCC. 1996 also contains 149 respondents who do not have JTOCC responses despite meeting known universe requirements.
