HINELIG6 indicates that the respondent was ineligible for employer-based health insurance if their employer offered it for some other reason besides not working enough (HINELIG1), being a contract or temporary employee (HINELIG2), not having worked long enough (HINELIG3), having a pre-existing condition (HINELIG4), or that the insurance is too expensive (HINELIG5).


This variable is comparable across samples.


  • ASEC 2014, ASEC 2015, ASEC 2016, ASEC 2017, and ASEC 2018: Respondents who were not covered by employer-based health insurance plans who are employed and not self-employed who were ineligible to purchase an employer's health insurance plan.
  • ASEC 2019 and ASEC 2020: Respondents who were employed, but not self employed, and covered by an employer-based health plan but were ineligible to purchase their own.
