- UnHarmonized Variables
GRPWHO1 is a 2-digit numeric variable.
GRPWHO1 indicates the line number of the first member of the household who was the policyholder for employment-based insurance covering the respondent during the previous calendar year. GRPWHO1 is a pointer value that allows researchers to link a dependent covered by employment-based insurance to the household member who was the policyholder of that insurance, using information in the LINENO variable.
Imagine, for example, that a male householder was the policyholder for employment-based insurance that also covered a co-resident child, and that the value of LINENO for the householder is 01. Imagine also that the wife of the householder was a policyholder for employment-based insurance that covered the same co-resident child, and that the value of LINENO for the wife is 02.
If both the householder and his wife declared their spouses as dependents on their employment-based insurance policies, then each would have the other's LINENO as the value for GRPWHO2.
The value of GRPWHO1 on the child's record would be 01, since the family health care plan of the householder supplied the coverage for that child, as a dependent. The value of GRPWHO2 on the child's record would be 02, reflecting coverage as a dependent from the employment-based insurance policy of the spouse. However, the policyholders themselves would be coded as 0 (not in universe) on these variables unless they are covered by someone else.
If the respondent was also covered by employment-based insurance from the policy of a second household member, that second policyholder is identified in the comparable GRPWHO2 variable.
Whether an individual was the policyholder for employment-based insurance is indicated by the GROUPOWN variable. Persons who had insurance coverage as dependents of a policyholder are identified in the GROUPDEP variable. GROUPTYP indicates whether the policyholder's employment-based health insurance covered the respondent only or also covered family members, and GROUPOUT reports whether the policyholder's coverage extended to persons outside the household.
User Note: For a set of variables that addresses many of the comparability issues in the CPS health insurance measures, see the summary health insurance variables created by the University of Minnesota's State Health Access Data Assistance Center.
This variable is comparable over time.
