The IPUMS-USA variable MIGPLAC1 is the closest equivalent to the IPUMS-CPS variable COUNTRY. Available only for the 1950 census and the ACS, MIGPLAC1 provides information on the U.S. state or country of previous residence for those who were living in a different house or apartment one year ago; it combines the information given separately in MIGSTA1 and COUNTRY in IPUMS-CPS. The number of countries identified in COUNTRY and MIGPLAC1 is similar, and countries identified in the CPS have been recoded into IPUMS values to maximize comparability between IPUMS-CPS and IPUMS-USA. Nonetheless, despite considerable overlap in the countries specifically identified in COUNTRY and MIGPLAC1, there are also some differences. For example, the only African country identified in MIGPLAC1 is the Union of South Africa, while other African countries, such as Ethiopia, Ghana, and Kenya, are identified in COUNTRY. Thus, the scope of broad geographical categories, such as "Other Africa," differs for these similar variables in IPUMS-CPS and IPUMS-USA.
