Description

CIUSECMP indicates whether a person directly uses a computer in the household for any reason.

This variable is part of the Computer Internet Supplement.

Comparability

For most years the question text only includes the word 'computer.' However, in 2010 the question text specifies desktop, laptop, netbook and notebook computers.

Prior to 2010, household computer ownership is a prerequisite for CIUSECMP. However, in 1984 and 1989 all children aged 3 to 14 received this question, regardless of whether it was reported the household owned a computer.

In 2010 this question asks if the respondent or anyone in the household owns or uses a computer at home. Prior to 2010 the respondent answered whether each household member individually uses a computer at home. Given the two changes (individual to household level, and "use" to "use or own"), the data from 2010 are not directly comparable to the previous years.

A comparable question was not asked in 2011. For a similar variable for 2011, see CINUMCMP.

Users should also be aware of documented universe changes.
