Description

CICOMPYR indicates the year a household's newest computer was purchased. The possible answer categories range from the current year to more than five years prior to the current year.

This variable takes on values from 1 (Current Year) to 8 (Before CY-5) so that the data remains relative to the sample year. If researches wish to represent this variable as an objective year (i.e. 1997, 1998, 1999, etc.) they need only subtract the value of (CICOMPYR-1) from YEAR (being sure to recode the CICOMPYR value 99 to missing), remembering that a value six years prior to the survey year represents all previous years, except for in 1984 where a value five years prior indicates all previous years.
