Description

Earner study - earnings eligibility flag - 1979-2025

Unicon Corporation made the following notes about this variable:
Note: The years denoted above as 'added' indicate corrected values were extracted from the corresponding BLS file and merged into the March file. For more details please see Appendix R. 2010-1994 those employed and in outgoing rotations (1<=mlr<=2 and mis=4 or 8) 1993-1979 - Eligibility is defined as follows: 1) In outgoing rotations and working and edited class is private and unedited class is blank, private or government (mis=4 or 8, esr=1 or 2, class=1, unedited class NE 5 - 8). 2) In outgoing rotations and working and edited class is government (mis=4 or 8, esr=1 or 2, class=2 - 4). This variable first appears in May 1979. However, other earner study variables appear in the first four months of this year. Unicon has assigned a value of 1 to observations in the first four months of 1979 which had a valid entry for paid hourly (year=79 and 1<=month<=4 and 1<=ernpdh<=2). March 1997 Technical Document states: "Beginning in 1982, usual hourly and weekly earnings data appear on the Annual Demographic File (ADF) for that portion of the population roughly corresponding to wage and salary workers (self-employed persons in incorporated businesses are excluded although they are normally included with the wage and salary population). These data are now collected on a monthly basis in the two outgoing rotation groups as part of the basic CPS labor force review. Since the intent of the regular collection of earnings data was to initiate a family earnings data series, all persons in the two outgoing rotations receive an "earnings weight", even if they are not eligible for the earnings item. The weight is a simple ratio-estimation to the person's labor force status by age, race, and sex. When tabulating estimates of earnings based on basic CPS data, use the earnings weight." WARNING: Documentation for 1994 says the variable is on the file. However, tabs on this variable show all zeros. A user suggests that ernel should be set to 1 (in 1994) if (ernpdh>0 and ernpdh<.).
