Unicon Corporation made the following notes about this variable:
Matching (source May 2004 BLS data layout) - To match before May 2004, use hhid. To match forward in time from this point, concatenate hhid with hhid2. hhid2 is itself a concatenation of sampid, serial, and hhnum. hhid is meant to be unique within a month. However, the Outgoing Rotation data series takes data from all 12 months. To identify a unique household, it is necessary to sort by hhid, and month. In June-August, 1995 hhid was being changed to the new format. The Census deliberately presented only a 5 digit ID in these months to make it impossible to identify individuals. Most geographic identifiers were also set to '-1' to insure confidentiality. Records in these 3 months cannot be matched to other months.
