Description

CIHFORWK indicates whether or not a person uses a home computer or internet for work related tasks. For 2001 and later years, this question was only asked of persons who were currently employed (See EMPSTAT).

This variable is part of the Computer Internet Supplement.

Comparability

CIHFORWK has undergone several questionnaire wording changes that affect comparability. For 1984, the question asked if the respondent used a computer at home for a job or business. For 1989, respondents were asked about connecting to a computer at work or working from home. For 1993 through 2003, this variable asks whether a computer was used to work at home. For 2011 and 2013, this question asks whether the person relies on the Internet to telecommute. Thus, 1993-2003 are the most comparable years. Users should exercise caution when comparing 1984 and 1989 samples to later years. Responses for 2011 and 2013 are not directly comparable to earlier years.

Researchers should also note the universe changes between samples.
