Description
FSSPDREST records the total amount spent by the household spent on food at restaurants, fast food places, cafeterias, and vending machines in the past week. Households that did not purchase food at any of these places receive a value of zero.
This is one of the variables used to calculate total spending on food in the last week FSTOTXPN. Households also report their usual weekly expenditures on food (FSULXPNS).
FSSPDREST is only available until 2014. In 2015, the continuous variable was discontinued from the public release data and a categorical variable was introduced. FSSPDRESTC contains data from 2015+ and recodes all previous years to the categorical coding scheme.
This variable is part of the Food Security Supplement.
Comparability
This variable is comparable across years, but the universe changes over time.
In most years, the question is asked of all households. In 1997, this question was asked of 6 of the 8 rotation groups. Beginning in 2010, food expenditure questions are restricted to non-group quarter households.
Documented topcodes change over time. Before 2011, there is no topcode. In 2011, the documentation gives a topcode of $260, but the data have an apparent topcode of $250. In 2012, 2013, and 2014, the documentation gives a topcode of $200, but the data are topcoded at $300.
