Description

FSTOTXPN indicates the total amount the household spent on food last week.

Food spending is calculated based expenditures in different stores and establishments. Households also report their usual weekly expenditures on food, which is available in FSULXPNS.

FSTOTXPN is only available until 2014. For a variable available 2015+ as well as harmonized backwards in time, see FSTOTXPNC.

This variable is part of the Food Security Supplement.

Comparability

The universe changes over time. Before 2010, total expenditure data are available for all households. After 2010, food expenditure questions are restricted to non-group quarter households.

Documented topcodes change over time. Before 2011, there is no topcode. In 2011, the topcode is $570. In 2012, the topcode is $500. In 2013, the documentation gives a topcode of $500, but the data have an apparent topcode of $600. In 2014, the documentation gives a topcode of $500, but the data have an apparent topcode of $625.
