Codes and Frequencies
Description
FSBUYMRMO indicates whether or not the household ran out of food and could not afford to buy more in the past 30 days. This variable is first available in 2002 and is asked only of households that reported running out of food in the past 12 months (FSBUYMR).
This question is one of the 18 items used to construct the 30-day household food security scale, FSSTATUSM. Households are screened into the Food Sufficiency and Food Security section of the supplement based on income and preliminary questions on food access (see FSSCREEN for more information).
Comparability
This variable codes are generally comparable over available years since 1995, and the universe is generally consistent since 1998. Prior to 1998, the screening procedures that determined which responding households were screened into the food security assessment changed each year. Researchers will need to use FSSCREEN to identify a consistent analytic sample when including data before 1998. In 2000, households in months-in-sample 8 were asked an experimental version of this question and are not included here.
Universe
- Dec 2002, Dec 2003, and Dec 2004: Households that ran out of food before they could afford to purchase more in the past year (see FSBUYMR) and that were screened into the food security assessment under current screening procedures and were in months-in-sample 8.
- 2005+: Households that ran out of food before they could afford to purchase more in the past year (see FSBUYMR) and that were screened into the food security assessment under current screening procedures.
