Data quality flag for FRBIRTHM.
This variable is a part of the CPS Fertility Supplement.
Comparability
QFRBIRTHM frequencies and coding in the 1987 and 1988 samples are inconsistent with surrounding samples. The data is not reflective of the documentation in these samples. The data quality of this flag is suspect in these years. When values labeled as âallocatedâ in the documentation are taken as such, the allocation rate is suspiciously high. Frequency variation in unlabeled codes in the 1987-1988 period make it unclear if there is any coding error in the original CPS data. A code of 1 indicates allocation, while a value of 0 indicates no allocation. However, in addition to these codes there are also values of 2, 3, and Blanks in the original data. IPUMS CPS has left allocations coded as printed in the codebook and recoded unlabeled codes as NIU. Researchers should exercise caution when using QFRBIRTHM in the 1987 and 1988 samples.
