Description

VVIETNAM indicates whether veterans served on active duty in Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia; in the waters in or around these countries; or in the air over these areas at any time between February 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975.

Comparability

In 1985 only males were eligible for the Veterans Supplement.

In 2003 and earlier, Veteran's supplement respondents were 18 and older; in 2005 and later, respondents to the supplement were 17 and older.

Apart from universe changes, VVIETNAM is otherwise comparable over time.

Universe

  • 1985: Male veterans who were on active duty between August 1964 and April 1975
  • 1987-1993: Veterans who were on active duty between August 1964 and April 1975
  • 1995: Veterans who were on active duty between August 1964 and April 1975; and current armed forces members born 1968 or earlier
  • 1997-2003: Veterans who were on active duty between August 1964 and April 1975, June 1950 and January 1955, September 1940 and July 1947; or during another time period and were born 1947 or earlier
  • 2005-2020: Veterans who were on active duty between February 1955 and April 1975; or between May 1975 and July 1990 and were born 1947 or earlier (except those whose service began in this period and continued beyond July 1990)
  • 2021-onward: Veterans who were on active duty between February 1955 and April 1975; or between May 1975 and July 1990 and were born 1951 or earlier (except those whose service began in this period and continued beyond July 1990)
