HINSWT is a 9-digit numeric variable.

Description

HINSWT is a variable constructed by the State Health Access Data Assistance Center (SHADAC) at the University of Minnesota. It differs from the standard WTSUPP in two ways:

• In any given year, about 10 percent of CPS respondents do not answer any of the ASEC supplement, and there appears to be a systematic bias in the imputation of data for these cases. SHADAC corrected for this by removing the cases for which no valid supplement data existed within the household, then weighted the remaining cases to the population totals.

• In the original CPS data, the 1991 and 1992 CPS data used weighted control totals based on the 1980 census. The 1990 and 1993-1998 CPS used weighted control totals based on the 1990 census. This results in disjointed estimates that are based on assumptions of population growth that did not necessarily hold, particularly for some subpopulations. SHADAC corrected for this by assigning control totals for 1991 and 1992 that were interpolated linearly between 1990 and 1993, and by assigning control totals for the 1994-1999 period that were interpolated linearly between 1993 and 2000.

HINSWT must be used when analyzing the summary health insurance variables created by the State Health Access Data Assistance Center (SHADAC) at the University of Minnesota. They are: HCOVANY, HCOVPRIV, HINSEMP, HINSPUR, HCOVPUB, HINSCAID, HINSCARE, and HINSMIL.

It may also be used with all other variables if users are concerned about wholly imputed households.

Comparability

This variable is available for the 1988-onward period and is completely comparable across all years.
