NMOTHERS is a 1-digit numeric code.
Description
NMOTHERS is a constructed variable (using MOMLOC) that counts the number of women within each unit who are identified as residing with their children. Units with no mothers present are coded 0.
Comparability
The comparability of this variable is affected by variations in the information available for identifying mothers; see MOMRULE.
Comparability with IPUMS-USA
As explained in MOMLOC and MOMRULE, the comparability of this variable between IPUMS-USA and IPUMS-CPS is limited by the less detailed information available on relationship to household head in IPUMS-CPS. In addition, mother-child links are only constructed for children age 18 and younger if the child's relationship to the householder was "non-relative" or "other relative." No such age restrictions govern mother-child links based on census data until 2000.
