NCOUPLES is a 1-digit numeric code.
Description
NCOUPLES is a constructed variable (using SPLOC) that counts the number of married couples within each unit. Units with no married couples present are coded 0.
Comparability
The comparability of this variable is affected by variations in the information available for identifying spouses; see SPRULE and RELATE.
Comparability with IPUMS-USA
NCOUPLES is conceptually identical in IPUMS-CPS and IPUMS-USA. Due to the more limited information on relationship to household head in the survey than in the census, the rules for linking spouses and the accuracy and completeness of links between spouses (counted in NCOUPLES) differ for the two datasets. See SPRULE for further details.
