DWREAS reports the reason why the respondent lost or left his/her job within the last several years.

In samples from 1994 and on, part of the definition of "displaced worker" is that the individual lost their job because the plant closed down, the shift or position was abolished, or there was insufficient work. In samples prior to 1994, the documentation suggests that the definition of a displaced worker is similarly restricted, but this assertion is not supported by the data.

This variable is part of the Displaced Workers Supplement.

Comparability

From 1984-1992, respondents who lost or left a job during the past five years are included in the supplement; from 1994 on, those who lost or left a job during the past three years are included.
