Description
GRPCOVLY indicates whether the respondent was covered, either as a policyholder or as a dependent of another household member, by employment-based group health insurance during the previous calendar year.
Comparability
User Note: For a set of variables that addresses many of the comparability issues in the CPS health insurance measures, see the summary health insurance variables created by the University of Minnesota's State Health Access Data Assistance Center.
In 1980-1987, interviewers asked whether respondents who had worked during the previous calendar year were included in a group health insurance plan on any job held during that period, whether the plan was in the respondent's own name, and who else in the household (i.e., spouse, children, and/or others) were included in that plan. The Census Bureau edited the data to allocate "yes" responses in GRPCOVLY not only to employment-based insurance policyholders but also to the co-resident persons identified as being covered by such insurance. Which other persons (spouse, children, and/or other persons) were covered by a policyholder's employment-based insurance plan is reported in WHOELSGH, on the person record of the policyholder.
Beginning in 2019, infants born after the calendar year, that is between January and March of the survey year, and could not have been covered by employment-based insurance during the last year from those who were in the household last year and did not have employment-based health insurance.
