Description

If an individual reported that he/she was registered to vote, but did not vote in the most recent November election, they were asked for the reason why they did not vote. New responses were added with each sample from 1996 until 2000, so some responses might not be available in earlier samples.

Users should note that there are a number of observations each year that have an NIU code for VOWHYNOT even though they respond that they were registered but did not vote. This comes from the original data in which blanks and Not in Universes were given the same code.

This variable is part of the Voter Supplement.

Comparability

Not all responses from later years are available for 1996 or 1998.

The November 2020 sample features a unique code for COVID-19 related reasons for not voting.

This variable is otherwise comparable across available years.
