Description

VOREGHOW reports the method that registered voters used to register to vote in the most recent November election.

This variable is part of the Voter Supplement.

Comparability

Between 1996 and 2002, this question was asked in three steps. First, the respondent was asked if they had registered to vote after January 1st, 1995 (see VOREG95), which was the day the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 came into effect. This law required all department of motor vehicles offices to provide voter registration. Next, the respondent was asked if they registered when they obtained or renewed their driver's license, or by some other way. If "some other way" was the response, the interviewer next gave them a list of other possible ways to register to vote.

From 2004 onward, the question is condensed into one question. The responses include both the "some other way" options plus "At the department of motor vehicles".
