The various income fields have been topcoded to prevent disclosure. In 1989, blanks were represented with unreadable characters. All the data in this field were unreadable characters, which were converted to missing. In some years, the top code flags seem to be inconsistent with the actual data. The top code flag for 2000 is completely wrong. See Appendix H.4 for details.
