See Appendix X for discussion regarding calculation of poverty rates. Not in Universe (NIU) is well detailed in the manuals for certain years but not for others. 1977, 1981-1985, 1987-1988 have no documentation aside from title of variable. It is assumed that they have the same universe as the other years from 1976-1988. 1976, 1978-1979 NIU is primary and secondary individuals. 1980 NIU is primary and unrelated individuals. 1986 NIU is nonfamily householder and unrelated individuals.

- 1968-1975: Families (excluding subfamilies) and individuals 14+.
- 1976-1988: All interview records.
