With the introduction of new geographic codes in May 2004, the concept of MSA has been replaced by CBSA. In June-August, 1995 hhid was being changed to the new format. The Census deliberately presented only a 5 digit ID in these months to make it impossible to identify individuals. Most geographic identifiers were also set to '-1' to insure confidentiality. Records in these 3 months cannot be matched to other months. Reflects 1983 population estimates (1985-1993). Range of 1980 population of MSA/CMSA (1994+). WARNING: This variable starts in October of 1985, prior to this see smsasz.
