Description

Received P-2025

UH_HPEBTYN_A1 reports whether the respondent or anyone else in the household received a school meal debit, pandemic EBT, or P-EBT card.

In 2020 the Families First Coronavirus Response Act established the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program. This program was a response to school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program was amended and continued by the Continuing Appropriations Act 2021 and Other Extensions Act, Consolidated Appropriations Act 2021, and American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

The P-EBT program distributed the value of school meal benefits to children who had been receiving free and reduced price lunches. If a child was already receiving SNAP benefits, the value was added to their SNAP card. If they did not receive SNAP benefits, they received a separate P-EBT card.

The P-EBT rate accounts for breakfast, lunch, and a snack; whereas the traditional SPM school lunch value includes the cost of lunch only. For more information on the use of P-EBT in SPM school lunch value calculations, see SPMLUNCH and Shrider, 2022.
