Description
Total Economic Impact Payments last year, 2021-2024
In 2020, Congress acted to provide direct payments - called Economic Impact Payments - in an attempt to mitigate the economic crisis precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The CARES Act, enacted in March of 2020, provided for up to $1,200 per eligible adult and $500 for qualifying children under age 17. Individuals with an adjusted gross income over $75,000 and married couples with an adjusted gross income over $150,000 recieved reduced payments.
The COVID-related Tax Relief Act of 2020, enacted in December, provided for up to $600 per eligible adult and for each qualifying child under age 17. Individuals with an adjusted gross income over $75,000 and married couples with an adjusted gross income over $150,000 recieved reduced payments.
In the 2021 ASEC, respondents were asked who in their household recieved Economic Impact Payments and in what amount. UH_EIPCRD_A1 is the total amount of Economic Impact Payments recieved by a CPS respondent during the previous year. Users should note that there was a high level of non-response to these questions. Bee et al. present several models for imputing Economic Impact Payments in the CPS ASEC and compare these to IRS benchmarks and to reported survey estimates.
