Description

SRCWKCOM reports the source of payments (other than sick pay and disability retirement) respondents received as a result of job-related injury or illness. The sources identified in the survey were state worker's compensation, employer or employer's insurance, own insurance, and "other." Though some persons probably received such compensation from more than one source, the variable included in the public use files identifies only one source (presumably that paying the largest amount) for each recipient of such payments.

Comparability

This variable is comparable over time.

The total amount of income from worker's compensation or other payments for job-related injury or illness during the previous calendar year is reported in INCWKCOM for 1988 forward.

For the pre-1988 period, the only information on income from payments for job-related illness or injury is included in the dichotomous variable GOTWKCOM. For 1976-1979, GOTWKCOM identifies persons who received income from worker's compensation during the previous calendar year. For 1980-1987, GOTWKCOM identifies persons who, during the previous calendar year, received worker's compensation or other payments for job-related injury or illness. Information on the specific amount of such income was recorded during the interview. In the public use files, however, these dollar figures were combined with amounts from other government programs (such as unemployment compensation and veterans' payments) in the INCGOV variable.
