Description
SPMGEOADJ is used to adjust the Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) threshold for geographic differences in the cost of living.
For more information on the calculation of the geographic adjustment factors, see the Census Bureau's "Geographic Adjustments of Supplemental Poverty Measure Thresholds" report.
Comparability
SPMGEOADJ is comparable across years from 2010 to 2018.
In 2019, the Census Bureau implemented a new processing system to accommodate survey changes. These changes affect income and relationship variables, making poverty measurements before and after 2019 incomparable. For more information on this overhaul, see our guide to the 2019 ASEC updates.
In 2021, the Census Bureau removed telephone expenditures from utilities, meaning that this portion of the SPM threshold is no longer geographically adjusted. For more information on the 2021 changes to the Supplemental Poverty Measure, see Burns and Fox, 2021.
