Description
OCC50LY recodes information contained in the variable OCCLY into the 1950 Census Bureau occupational classification system. OCC50LY provides consistent occupational codes for the jobs respondents reported working during the previous calendar year, for 1968 forward. Information on occupation during the previous year is given as it appeared in the original survey data in OCCLY. For both OCCLY and OCC50LY, respondents were to report the jobs they held for the longest time during the previous year.
The occupations of persons employed at the time of the survey is reported in OCC, and this information is recoded into the consistent 1950 occupational classification system in OCC1950. OCC and OCC1950 also provide information about the most recent jobs of persons not employed at the time of the survey.
Comparability
Apart from changes in the universe, OCC50LY is fairly comparable over time. Researchers should keep in mind, however, that the translation of occupation codes into the 1950 classification is relatively problematic for the 1980, 1990, and 2000 census classification systems, which went into effect beginning with the 1983 CPS data. For further discussion of this issue, consult the IPUMS-USA documentation.
Universe
- 1968-1979: Civilians age 14+ who worked last year.
- 1980-1987, 1990+: Civilians age 15+ who worked last year.
- 1988-1989: Civilians age 15+ who worked last year, and armed forces members.
