NFATHERS is a 1-digit numeric code.
Description
NFATHERS is a constructed variable (using POPLOC) that counts the number of men within each unit who are identified as residing with their children. Units with no fathers present are coded 0.
Comparability
The comparability of this variable is affected by variations in the information available for identifying fathers; see POPRULE.
Comparability with IPUMS-USA
As explained in POPLOC and POPRULE, the comparability of this variable between IPUMS-USA and IPUMS-CPS is limited by the less detailed information available on relationship to household head in IPUMS-CPS. In addition, father-child links are only constructed for children age 18 and younger if the child's relationship to the householder was "non-relative" or "other relative." No such age restrictions govern father-child links based on census data prior to 2000.
