Description
MIGSTA5 reports the state of previous residence for respondents who were living in a different house in the U.S. five years ago. Beginning in 1985, every ten years, in years that end in 5, the survey includes five-year migration questions in addition to the one-year migration questions. In 1985, 1995, and 2005 surveys, interviewers asked whether respondents were living in the same house or apartment five years ago (on March 1 of 1980, 1990, 2000). Movers (those who answered, "No") then supplied information about the city/town/post office, county/parish, and U.S. state or foreign country where they lived on that date.
The MIGRATE5 variable identifies nonmovers and classifies movers according to whether their change of residence crossed county lines, state lines, or international boundaries. MIGSTA1 specifies the state of previous residence for those who were living in a different house in the U.S. one year ago.
Comparability
MIGSTA5 is available for 1985, 1995, and 2005, and is comparable over time.
