Comparability
This variable is comparable over time.
Comparability with IPUMS-USA
In IPUMS-USA, the FUELHEAT variable is available for all households that were occupied and were not group quarters; in IPUMS-CPS, FUELHEAT is available only for households that received energy assistance. The census and ACS data include the classification "solar energy"; the CPS includes solar energy in the "other" category.

- 1982-1986: Households and group quarters that received energy assistance.
- 1987: Households and group quarters with an income of less than $30,000.
