Description
FSSPDRESTC records the total amount spent by the household spent on food at restaurants, fast food places, cafeterias, and vending machines in the past week. Households that did not purchase food at any of these places receive a value of zero.
FSSPDRESTC is a categorical recode of the continuous FSSPDREST. In 2015, the continuous variable was discontinued from the public release data and a categorical variable was introduced. FSSPDRESTC recodes all previous years to the 2015 coding scheme. FSSPDREST will no longer be updated for new samples.
This is one of the variables used to calculate total spending on food in the last week FSTOTXPN. Households also report their usual weekly expenditures on food (FSULXPNS).
This variable is part of the Food Security Supplement.
Comparability
This variable is comparable across years, but the universe changes over time.
In most years, the question is asked of all households. In 1997, this question was asked of 6 of the 8 rotation groups. Beginning in 2010, food expenditure questions are restricted to non-group quarter households.
Documented top codes change over time.
