Description

FSSPDLES indicates how much less money the household could spend per week and still meet basic household food requirements. This question is asked of households that indicated they could spend less for food (FSSPDML).

FSSPDLES is only available until 2014. In 2015, the continuous variable was discontinued from the public release data and a categorical variable was introduced. FSSPDLESC contains data from 2015+ and recodes all previous years to the categorical coding scheme.

This variable is part of the Food Security Supplement.

Comparability

With the exception of topcode changes and universe changes, this variable is comparable over available years. In 2011, a topcode of $175 was introduced (prior to 2011 there was no topcode). In 2012, the topcode is $150. In 2013 and 2014, the topcode is $200. From 2010, group quarters households are not asked this question.

Universe

  • 2000-2009: All supplement households who indicated they could spend less money and still meet food needs.
  • Apr 2001: All supplement households who indicated they could spend less money and still meet food needs and that are in months-in-sample 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8.
  • 2010-2014: All non-group quarters supplement households who indicated they could spend less money and still meet food needs.
