Description
FSFRHDSTC indicates if a child or children in the household received any free or reduced cost food from Head Start or a day-care program in the past 30 days. This question is asked in households with children under age 12.
This variable is part of the Food Security Supplement.
Comparability
This variable is comparable in available years, but the universe changes over time. Between 1995 and 1999, this question is asked only of households with incomes below 185% of poverty. From 2000 forward, higher income households that reported running short of money for food (FSSHORT) are also included in the universe.
Universe
- Apr 1995 and Sep 1996: Households below 185% poverty that contain a child under age 12.
- 2000-2021: Households below 185% poverty or have run short of money for food in the past year that contain a child under age 12.
- Apr 2001: Households below 185% poverty or have run short of money for food in the past year that contain a child under age 12 and are in months-in-sample 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8.
- 2022: Households below 185% poverty, or have run short of money for food in the past year, or report food insufficiency, and contain a child between the ages of 0 and 6.
