Description

FSBALCHMO indicates if the household could not afford to feed the child or children a balanced diet within the last 30 days. This question is available since 2002 and asked only in households that could not afford to feed children a balanced meal at some point in the past year (FSBALCH).

This question is one of the 8 items used to construct the 30-day child food security scale, FSSTATUSMC and is also used to determine household food security status FSSTATUSM. Households are screened into the Food Sufficiency and Food Security section of the supplement based on income and preliminary questions on food access (see FSSCREEN for more information).

Comparability

In 2007, households in certain months-in-sample were asked experimental versions of (FSBALCH). Differences in the comparability of these test questions may impact the comparability of the sample eligible to answer FSBALCHMO. The responses for 2007 respondents in months-in-sample 3 and 8 have known comparability issues, and analysts may want to exclude these cases from analysis.

In years 2002-2004, FSBALCHMO is available only for households in months-in-sample 8.
