Codes

This variable is not available for any of the currently selected samples.

Description

FREXPECTN reports the number of additional children a woman expects to have. This variable is a part of the CPS Fertility Supplement.

In 1976 and 1977 there are male records (two and one, respectively) that have values for FREXPECTN. These records had SEX allocated by IPUMS. See QSEX for details.

In 1979, all male records have a value of zero for FREXPECTN. These have been recoded to NIU. There are several records with an age over 59 who have real values for this variable. These are not expected to be in-universe, however, they appear in the original data.

In 1982 and 1983, there is one male record that has a value for FREXPECTN. These records had SEX allocated by IPUMS. See QSEX for details.

In 1986 - 1988, there are records for women who indicated they were expecting to have more children who are not in universe for FREXPECTN. These are expected to be in universe, but are NIU in the original data.

1986-1988 have several male records which have values for FREXPECTN. These are not expected to be in universe, but appear in the original data.

Comparability

In samples from 1992 and before, the value 6 represents six or more children, while respondents were able to report up to 12 expected children in the 1998 sample.

In 1981-1983, there are female records who are NIU for FREXPECT have non-NIU values for FREXPECTN, however, these are all "None."

In the 1986-1988, 1990, 1992, and 1998 samples, the universe for FREXPECTN only includes those who indicated that they were expecting more children (FREXPECT) and "None" is not a possible response to FREXPECTN in these samples. In 1980-1983 samples, women in the in-universe age range are also asked whether or not they expect to have more children before being asked how many more they intend to have. However, in these years, women who respond with "No" or "Uncertain" to FREXPECT are coded as "None" for FREXPECTN.
