Description
FIRMSIZE indicates the total number of persons who worked for the respondent's employer during the preceding calendar year, counting all locations where the employer operated. If the individual was self-employed in a business or farm, the response to FIRMSIZE indicates how many employees worked for the respondent. Responses were grouped into broad categories, such as "under 25 employees," "25 to 99 employees," "100 to 499 employees," "500 to 999 employees," and "1000+ employees."
Comparability
This variable is largely comparable across years. For 1988-1991, the smallest firms were grouped together into the single category "under 25 employees." Beginning in 1992, this classification was subdivided into "under 10 employees" and "10 to 24 employees."
From 2011-2018, the "10 to 24 employees" and "25 to 99 employees" groups were replaced by "10 to 49 employees" and "50 to 99 employees" groups. The pre-2011 format returns beginning in 2019. This change is not reflected in the 2019 ASEC questionnaire, and users should note IPUMS-CPS provides the questionnaire as shown in the original documentation.
Universe
