DPWHO1 is a 2-digit numeric variable.

Description

DPWHO1 and DPWHO2 indicate the line numbers of the first and second members of the household who were the policyholders for direct-purchased private insurance covering the respondent during the previous calendar year. DPWHO1 and DPWHO2 are pointer variables that allow researchers to link a dependent covered by direct-purchase insurance to the household members who were the policyholders of that insurance, using information in the LINENO variable.

Imagine, for example, that a male householder was the policyholder for direct-purchase insurance that also covered a co-resident child, and that the value of LINENO for the householder is 01. Imagine also that the wife of the householder was a policyholder for direct-purchase private insurance that covered the same co-resident child, and that the value of LINENO for the wife is 02.

The value of DPWHO1 on the child's record would be 01, since the direct-purchase private family health care plan of the householder supplied the coverage for that child, as a dependent. The value of DPWHO2 on the child's record would be 02, reflecting coverage as a dependent from the direct-purchase insurance policy of the spouse. However, the policyholders themselves would be coded as 0 (not in universe) on these variables.

Whether an individual was the policyholder for direct-purchase insurance last year is indicated by the DPOWNLY variable. Persons who had insurance coverage as dependents of a policyholder are identified in the DPDEPLY variable. DPTYPLY indicates whether the policyholder's direct-purchase health insurance covered the respondent only or also covered family members last year, and DPOUTLY reports whether the policyholder's coverage extended to persons outside the household.
