CWSEREAS indicates the reason that a worker is self-employed (CWSEEMP) or an independent contractor (CWCONTRACTIC).

This variable is part of the Contingent Work Supplement.

Comparability

In each sample there are a small number of cases that are classed as "Not in Universe" despite meeting universe requirements. The number of cases in each sample is as follows:
1995: 6
1997: 44
1999: 69
2001: 66
2005: 67

Universe

  • 1995-1999: Civilians age 16+ who were either self-employed or working as an independent contractor, independent consultant, or free-lance worker in the past week.
  • 2001-2005: Civilians in month-in-sample 1-3 or 5-7 age 16+ who were either self-employed or working as an independent contractor, independent consultant, or free-lance worker in the past week.
  • 2017: Civilians age 16+ who were either self-employed or working as an independent contractor, independent consultant, or free-lance worker in the past week.
