Comparability
Users should exercise caution when using CWRETEMPANY in samples before 2017. IPUMS-CPS staff were unable to determine a clear universe for this variable in those samples. According to the codebooks, all self-employed respondents should be NIU for CWRETEMPANY. In the data, being self-employed does not seem to be a disqualifier for this variable on its own. However, there are a significant number of self-employed persons who are NIU for an unknown reason in each sample. The number of nonconforming responses in each sample is as follows:
