This variable is comparable across years.

1995-1997: Civilians age 16+ who were employed, but not self-employed, and did not change employers in the past week, had a temporary job or did not report being able to keep their jobs indefinitely independent of external circumstances and job performance AND did not report a work related end to employment or having seasonal employment, did not identify a specific life event that would end that employment, and do not think their employment will continue for over a year.
2001-2005: Civilians in month-in-sample 1-3 or 5-7 age 16+ who were employed, but not self-employed, and did not change employers in the past week, had a temporary job or did not report being able to keep their jobs indefinitely independent of external circumstances and job performance AND did not report a work related end to employment or having seasonal employment, did not identify a specific life event that would end that employment, and do not think their employment will continue for over a year.
2017: Civilians age 16+ who were employed, but not self-employed, and did not change employers in the past week, had a temporary job or did not report being able to keep their jobs indefinitely independent of external circumstances and job performance AND did not report a work related end to employment or having seasonal employment, and did not identify a specific life event that would end that employment.
