Description

CWHIHOW reports the source of health insurance for respondents who have health insurance (see CWHICOV) and are self-employed, or do not get their health insurance through their primary employer (see CWHIEMP).

This variable is part of the Contingent Work Supplement.

Comparability

In some samples there are a small number of respondents who are classified as "not in universe" despite meeting universe requirements. These are as follows:
1997: 21
1999: 35
2001: 31

This variable is otherwise comparable across years.

Universe

  • 1995-1999: Civilians age 16+ who were self-employed or did not get health insurance through their primary employer, but did have health insurance.
  • 2001-2005: Civilians in month-in-sample 1-3 or 5-7 age 16+ who were self-employed or did not get health insurance through their primary employer, but did have health insurance.
  • 2017: Civilians age 16+ who were self-employed or did not get health insurance through their primary employer, but did have health insurance.
