If the respondent was supposed to receive child support payments last year, CSWAYPAY describes the method by which the other parent gave child support. This variable is found on the parent record.

Blank values for this variable represent individuals who were not interviewed in April of the sample year.

This variable is part of the Child Support Supplement.

Comparability

The question for this variable did not change over the available samples, but the possible responses and level of detail change over time. For example, the integrated category "Through a court" was "Through a court or public agency" in the original data for the 1992 sample. Also, the response for "Directly" in 1992 was originally "Directly from [the child's] father/mother in the form of cash or a check".In the 1992 sample there are 3,444 respondents who are NIU for all Child Support Supplement variables despite meeting known supplement universe requirements.
